Sparrow Installation Services were appointed to install a backup generator to support an MRI scanner inside a building with restricted access and scaffolding around the working area. The project required careful planning, specialist lifting equipment and precise final positioning.

Road plates were used to protect services in front of the opening.
Initial lift and positioning
A Versa Lift 40/60 was used with fork attachments to lift and move the generator as far as possible.
Sparrow Installation Services were appointed for a second visit following the successful installation of a backup generator in Plymouth. This phase involved installing silencers onto steelwork, moving the load into the building, and positioning inlet and outlet attenuators on both sides of the structure.
The work required a three-person team, a JCB 540/170 telehandler with jib attachment, fork extensions, jacks and skates to safely handle and position loads of around 3 tonnes each.
The Challenge
The generator needed to be installed inside a building with tight access, while the working area was boxed in by scaffolding. The team also needed to protect services in front of the opening and move the generator safely into a precise final position.
Our Approach
Provided a versa lift and a 2 man team with jacks and skates.
The Solution
We provided a versa lift 40/60 and road plates to protect the services in front of the opening then lifted the generator on the forks attachment and placed the generator as far as we could on to skates then pushed the generator with the versa lift using timbers into a near final position where we then used jacks skates and bars to get it to the final millimetre perfect position.

Final Precision Movement
Jacks, skates, bars and timbers were used to move the generator into its final millimetre-perfect position.
The Result
The generator was installed on time and without issue, giving the client a backup power solution to support the MRI scanner.
