Sparrows Installation Services completed the removal of eight temporary classroom cabins from a school site in Exeter, using a JCB telehandler, Versa Lift and mobile crane to avoid working within the railway boundary restrictions.
The Challenge
Due to the cabins being installed close to Network Rail boundaries, a mobile crane could not be used in the original location without longer notice, formal agreement and a potential line closure. With the project needing to move forward quickly, Sparrows Installation Services developed an alternative method to remove the cabins safely without relying on the mobile crane in that restricted area.
Our Approach
Using a JCB 540/170 telehandler with jib attachment and a Versa Lift 25/35 with jib attachment, the team picked and travelled the cabins in tandem until they were clear of the railway boundary area. Once moved to a suitable location, a 40 tonne mobile crane was waiting to receive the cabins and load them onto transport.
The Solution
The team used a combination of telehandler support, Versa Lift handling and mobile crane lifting to remove the temporary classroom cabins in stages. Each cabin weighed approximately 4.5 tonnes, with the tandem moving method allowing the cabins to be safely travelled away from the restricted railway boundary area before being lifted and loaded for transport.

The Result
